China And Germany Sign Environment Cooperation Deal

China and Germany have signed a combined document for setting up two work teams for energy and environmental protection.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met German Prime Minister Angela Merkel in Beijing and they held a series of discussions on the cooperation between the two countries regarding environment, energy and recycling.

Premier Wen Jiabao said that China and Germany should focus on cooperation on energy and environmental protection and actively cooperate on clean energy, renewable energy, energy saving and emission reductions and low carbon sectors. Wen encouraged the two countries to further expand their investment in each other and support the enterprises of the two countries in cooperating on finance, modern logistics, construction engineering and software development.

Premier Wen also introduced the policies and measures that Chinese government had taken on product quality and food safety. Speaking of climate change, Premier Wen said that Chinese government had attached great importance to global climate change and would like to undertake responsibilities to deal with the climate change along with Germany.

German Prime Minister Angela Merkel said Germany admired the achievements that China had made and hoped China would develop further, which she believed was for the good of both Germany and the world. Merkel also expressed her wish to cooperate with China on climate change, energy, environment protection and recycling economy.

At the same time, the Gaobeidian Water Environment R&D Centre, the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology of Tsinghua University, Germany, and 15 other EU members have entered into joint research on multi-stage quality guarantee of reclaimed water in Beijing.

Building on the advanced concept of multi-stage quality guarantee, this project has made an in-depth study of the quality safety and health risks of the reclaimed water and succeeded in development of a technique for artificial recharge of reclaimed water to underground water which is suitable for the Beijing area.
